Home Firearm Safety

The NRA Home Firearm Safety Course is a non-shooting course and  teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, course completion certificate, and Lesson Plan.

NRA Home Firearm Safety meets the current training requirements for both LTC and FID in Massachusetts. Please see the Basic Pistol page for details on other states' training requirements.

Additional course curriculum is provided per M.G.L. Chapter 140: Section 131P, 5.15 CMR 3.00, etc. This includes information on licensing, storage, transport, etc. A hard copy plus a CD containing this and other course materials is also provided to each student.

Since the course is conducted entirely in a classroom environment, it can be presented in any suitable venue. On-site group or private courses are offered by appointment. Firearms and all other necessary teaching aids are provided by the instructor, and a second instructor is provided for large classes.

The NRA Home Firearm Safety course is family oriented. Massachusetts residents between the ages of 15 and 18 may apply for an FID with written permission of a parent or guardian. Juveniles are welcome to attend with the course, and families are encouraged to attend together.

Please note that Massachusetts, as well as most other states, requires all applicants for a hunting license to attend a Hunter Education course. The NRA Home Firearm Safety course qualifies you for both an LTC and FID, but not a hunting license.  For more information on Massachusetts hunting regulations and license requirements, visit MassWildelife.
